2nd Bangladesh, West Indies ODI today
Bangladesh can take their heart from the fact that they will play their second one-day international against West Indies today on the same wicket where they had defeated the visitors in the Twenty20 match on Tuesday.
The first ODI against the Caribbeans on Thursday was played on number six strip and Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim blamed the pitch for their defeat as it did not provide any assistance to the spinners, considered to be the main strength of the Tigers.
West Indies posted a mammoth 298-4 without giving away any wickets to the spinners to win the match by 40 runs.
The second ODI will be played on pitch number three where Bangladesh defeated the tourists by three wickets in their lone Twenty20 match to start the series on a winning note.
The Tigers will have to win this match which begins at 1:30pm at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium if they are to defend their last one-day series victory against West Indies when they defeated a depleted home side 3-0 in 2009.
Skipper Mushfiqur Rahim who will be playing his one hundredth ODI today, the ninth Bangladeshi cricketer to achieve the feat, said they will go out to win the match and can do so if they can minimise their mistakes and if the wicket assists his spinners.
‘If we get the assistance from the wicket then
it will always be hard for them to beat us. Any team that want to beat us will have to play their best to win against us in our condition,’ Mushfiq told reporters after the first defeat on Thursday.
‘I think we did not play our best cricket in all three departments – batting bowling and fielding. Hopefully we will not make the same mistakes that we did in our next match,’ he added.
West Indies skipper Darren Sammy and Adrian Barath are doubtful for today’s match and the team management will make an assessment about them in the morning before selecting the playing eleven.
Sammy could not play the first match due to an upset stomach while Adrian Barath left the field with a hamstring injury.
‘Sammy is better today but we will see him tomorrow. As for Barath we will have an assessment of his condition tomorrow,’ Phillip Spooner, spokesman for West Indies team, told New Age
